Coming Together for Recovery in Texas

In February, historic arctic storms swept through Texas. These winter storms resulted in water and food shortages, widespread power outages, and dangerous weather conditions.

NBC News quoted Water Mission CEO and President George Green IV, PE in an article this week on the devastation. “The residents in one of the largest states in the U.S. are experiencing a plumbing catastrophe due to burst pipes from freezing temperatures and significant power outages.”

According to Greg Sizemore at the Association of Builders and Contractors, “It could take months for contractors to fix the damage the massive storm inflicted on Texas.”

Water Mission is collaborating with Plumbers Without Borders, the Austin Disaster Relief Network (ADRN), and its corporate partners to mobilize skilled labor and provide urgently needed plumbing-related supplies. As reported by ABC News, the goal is “to get safe water flowing in homes for the most vulnerable residents, including the elderly, disabled, uninsured, and underinsured.”

ADRN’s call center, volunteer management program, and warehouse are three key elements to an efficient and effective recovery.

The call center is already identifying where the need is greatest. This ensures a smart, targeted response.

Water Mission has arranged with Plumbers Without Borders to reach out to its network of 1,600 licensed plumbers. ADRN’s volunteer management program is overseeing the licensed plumbers as they arrive. This means these individuals can begin work quickly and with a clear game plan.

We are also working with our corporate partners to stock ADRN’s warehouse with a plumbing depot. This allows volunteers to easily restock materials and equipment, so they can spend time serving, not tracking down scarce critical materials.

At home or abroad, safe water is a necessity in any crisis. The network and connections Water Mission has been blessed to build over the years are coming together to support the most vulnerable Texans.
