Walk for Water

Start a Walk for Water

Around the world, 2.2 billion people lack access to safe water. Millions of women and children walk more than three miles to collect water for their families every day. Often this water is not safe to drink, resulting in illness and even death. But we have the power to change this.

Water Mission’s Walk for Water is a unique event where you have the opportunity to walk in the shoes of our global neighbors. By doing so, you raise awareness and funds to help end the global water crisis. Whether you are part of the flagship Walk in Charleston, join a Walk elsewhere, or start your own Walk for Water, you can help change lives.

Join a Walk for Water

Since 2005, thousands of walkers have raised millions of dollars to fight the global water crisis through Walk for Water events. The Water Mission Walk for Water started in Charleston, SC, and has expanded to Walk events across the United States and in more than 35 countries around the world.

Start a Walk for Water

Starting a Walk for Water is a great opportunity to rally your church, community, or organization to raise awareness and funds to fight the global water crisis. Since 2001, Water Mission has served more than 7 million people in 57 countries. By coming alongside Water Mission, you are part of the solution. Through you, Water Mission will be able to impact the lives of more men, women, and children who currently lack access to safe water.

Water Mission’s step-by-step guide makes it easy to start planning your own Walk for Water. Our Walk for Water Team is here to support you through the entire process.

History of the Walk for Water

George and Molly Greene started Water Mission in 2001 after witnessing the need for safe water in Honduras following the destruction brought on by Hurricane Mitch. Molly wanted to provide an opportunity for others to understand the day-to-day experience of the 2.2 billion people affected by the global water crisis. In 2006, we created the Walk for Water to simulate the three-mile trek women and children make every day to collect water.

During the Walk for Water, participants walk approximately 1.5 miles to the midway point with an empty bucket. There, they fill their bucket with dirty water and carry it another 1.5 miles to the end of the Walk.

The first Walk for Water was held in Charleston, SC. As churches, community groups, and corporate partners have embraced the vision for the Walk for Water, the program has spread across the United States. Longtime partners Grundfos, Georg Fischer, and Hach have even expanded their Walks to include international offices in 35 countries.

As the Walk for Water continues to grow, our purpose is the same: to provide communities, organizations, and companies with a local opportunity to raise awareness of the global water crisis and funds to fight it.

This project is six years old. The safe water system serves 100% of the community of 200 families, producing 1,200 gal/day. Each family gets two to three canisters each day. They used to come to the well and take water. They had boil it though, which meant either spending money on firewood or spending time traveling to collect wood for the fire—also an economic impact.

Safe water distribution is open from 7 – 10 am and 3 – 6 pm.

Ramon Vellegas Timana is proud to be the SWC President and proud of what has been accomplished. “The quality of life has improved greatly. The kids don’t get sick anymore.”

When Lili from Water Mission arrived, she noticed fish swimming in the well. As we did our assessment, she asked, “What do you do with the fish when you clean the well?” They told her that they took out much of the water, scooped up the fish and put them in buckets, then finished cleaning out the well. When the water filled back up, they poured the fish back into the well. Lili asked why they didn’t keep the fish out of the well, and they said the fish made the water taste better. She told them, “Don’t you realize they are doing their necessities in the water you’re drinking? They do it just like everyone else.” They had not thought much about this, but the next time Lili showed up, the fish had all be removed from the well.
